Coronado Beach and Hotel – Guide to Planning Your Visit

Coronado Beach, located in San Diego, California, is a beautiful, wide stretch of golden sand known for its gentle waves and Iconic Hotel del Coronado (often called the Del). The hotel, a historic Victorian-style resort that has had the pleasure of housing celebrities, presidents, and inspired the famous novel Some Like It Hot. The most famous celebrity to stay in this hotel was the icon, Marolyn Monroe. The Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, the hotel is a National Historic Landmark and boasts stunning ocean views, upscale dining, and a rich history. Visitors to Coronado Beach can enjoy tanning, leisure surfing (waves aren’t too large and aggressive), and beautiful sunsets, all while experiencing the charm of one of California’s most famous coastal destinations with the historic hotel as a backdrop.

What makes Coronado Beach a must visit, you might ask? Where to begin, first, Coronado Beach is a must-visit because of its soft golden sand, it’s not harsh or filled with pebble rocks making it painful to walk through, but gentle to walk through. The beach offers gentle waves as well, making it perfect for swimming, surfing, body boarding, and family-friendly smaller waves that aren’t too large and dangerous. Its backdrop features the historic Hotel del Coronado, adding a touch of vintage architectural charm and luxury to the experience. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, breathtaking sunsets, or a taste of history, Coronado Beach delivers a memorable time that you won’t forget.

This guide will help you cover the beautiful beaches and the surrounding areas, the Hotel del Coronado and the food and recreational options nearby. How to get to Coronado, making sure the trip and parking are hassle free. Best time to visit, to help avoid overcrowding days and times.

Getting To Coronado Beach

There are two ways to get to Coronado Beach, by ferry or car, but there are some important details to consider before making the trip out to this beach.

Drive to the Coronado Ferry Landing

This is the much more fun idea if you ask me. It’s not every day you have the opportunity to take a ferry ride. This ferry ride on its own is a fun little adventure which offers stunning views of the San Diego skyline. Start by driving to the Broadway Pier or the Convention Center in downtown San Diego, where you can park your car in nearby public lots or garages. Then, board the Coronado Ferry (it departs daily) and enjoy the mini trip before landing at the Coronado Ferry Landing on the other side! Once there you can rent a bike or take a rideshare or even take a short walk to the beach. As of the time of this writing, ferry tickets are $9 one way, $18 per person and children under the age of 4 ride for free.

Drive Over the Coronado Bridge

For those that prefer to drive in and have a more direct approach to arriving at the beach, you can drive across the famous Coronado Bridge for a stunning view of downtown and Coronado as you pass through the bridge. This scenic route leads you straight into Coronado, where you can park near the beach or Hotel del Coronado. It’s free of charge without any toll fees attached to cross in either direction.

Coronado Beach Parking Options and Tips

There is parking availability, but it can be limited, especially on weekends and during peak seasons. There is free street parking along Ocean Boulevard, but it fills up quickly. Nearby residential streets also offer parking but be careful of restrictions you might oversee. If street parking is full, you can try paid parking lots near Hotel del Coronado or the Coronado Ferry Landing, though these may require a short walk to the beach. Arriving early or visiting on a weekday can improve your chances of finding a spot.

Exploring Coronado Beach

What Makes Coronado Beach One of the Best Beaches in the US?

As mentioned above, Coronado Beach is a must visit in San Diego for the golden sand filled with mica particles shimmering under the sun. Its gentle sand and waves with the beautiful backdrop of the Hotel del Coronado all combined help make it one of the best beaches in the US. Coronado has a slower paced beach that doesn’t feel too chaotic like other beaches could feel when they’re overcome by too many visitors. You come to Coronado beach to tan, relax, enjoy the soft sand and gentle waves without too much of the extra stuff.

Best Times to Visit for Crowds, Weather and Sunset Views at Coronado Beach

Avoiding Crowds

The best time to visit with fewer people is early mornings or weekdays, especially Tuesday through Thursday, you’ll have so much beach all to yourself during these days and times. Summer weekends and holidays can get busy, so visiting in the late fall, winter, or early spring (except major holidays) offers a more peaceful experience.

Finding the Ideal Weather

Coronado Beach enjoys what I would describe as perfect weather year-round, with mild temperatures that never really get too hot, but the best months for warm, sunny days with little fog for those seeking warmer temperatures are late spring to early fall (April–October). June can bring some overcast mornings due to famous (locally famous anyway) “June Gloom,” but it usually clears up by midday.

Beautiful Sunsets

The most beautiful sunsets are typically seen in the fall and winter months (October–February) when the sky is clear and filled with vibrant colors. For some reason, I always thought it would be during the summer. The sunset here is breathtaking year-round, but arriving about an hour before sunset allows you to enjoy the golden light reflecting off the beach’s famous shimmering sand (I’m telling you, that sparkling mica!). A bonus is turning around and seeing the skyline as the sun fades, and you begin to see the skyline light up.

Activities to Enjoy

The beach offers consistent waves suitable for all skill levels, with the best surf conditions typically found near North Beach and the area around Hotel del Coronado. The waves are generally mellow and beginner-friendly (ideal for me) but can get larger during winter swells. While there are no major reef breaks, sandbars help shape fun, rideable waves. If you’re a beginner (that’s me again), there are local surf schools and rental shops nearby to help you get started. You can technically paddleboard as well, however, the more ideal spot for activity would be next door on Glorietta Bay, behind the Hotel del Coronado.

Other fun activities are of course swimming in the gentle waves, walking up and down the beach as your feet clash on the waves. Then slow it down for some tanning on a large beach towel as you lay on the gentle sands surface, reading a nice book as you snack while forgetting all of life’s stresses.

The Iconic Hotel del Coronado

The Hotel del Coronado, often called The Del, is a historic beachfront hotel on Coronado Island, just across the bay from San Diego, California. In my opinion, it’s one of the most beautiful hotels San Diego has to offer. Here are some fascinating details about it:

  • Historic Landmark – Opened in 1888, it was the largest wooden structure in the world at the time, which quite frankly, has aged beautifully over a century later.
  • As previously mentioned, it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977 due to its architectural and historical significance.
  • The hotel was built in a unique sort of Victorian beach resort style, the hotel is famous for its red-roofed turrets and grand wooden structure. I remember seeing it for the first time when I was much younger and even then, I could tell it was something special.
  • The Hotel del Coronado has hosted several U.S. presidents, including Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. If the hotel is worthy of hosting a presidential resident, then surely it must be good enough for me!
  • Many Hollywood stars have stayed at the Hotel del Coronado, including Marilyn Monroe, Charlie Chaplin, and Frank Sinatra.
  • Movie filmed on location -The classic 1959 film Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe was filmed at the hotel.
  • Beach and Luxury Experience -The Del boasts one of the best beachfront locations in California, with a prime spot on Coronado Beach, walking distance to the beach is literally seconds! It now offers modern luxury accommodations, including beachside villas, spa services, and fine dining. You’ll never even have to leave the hotel.
  • Standard Rooms Cost – Rates typically range from $407 to $745 per night.
  • Suites – These more spacious options generally fall between $803 and $1,768 per night

More Things to Do on Coronado Island

Walking or Biking Along Orange Avenue

Walking or biking along Orange Avenue in Coronado is a fantastic way to explore the heart of this charming island (very small island!) community. The avenue is lined with boutique shops (you know I love those), cozy cafés, art galleries, and restaurants, making it a lively and scenic route. Biking is especially popular since the streets are bike-friendly, and there are several rental shops if you don’t have your own. So, as you work your way down the avenue, you’ll pass through beautiful tree-lined streets, historic buildings, and eventually reach the Hotel del Coronado and Coronado Beach, making for a perfect leisurely ride or stroll. It’s a slow-paced area, so learn to take it slow and easy while visiting.

Visiting the Coronado Ferry Landing for Shopping and Dining

If you’re looking to mix it up beyond the surfing, tanning, and swimming on the beach, try visiting the Coronado Ferry Landing. It can be a great way to enjoy shopping and dining with beautiful waterfront views of the San Diego skyline. You can find boutique shops, art galleries, and souvenir stores, perfect for finding unique gifts or beachwear. There are also a variety of restaurants and cafés, ranging from casual spots for tacos and seafood to more upscale dining with bayfront seating. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee, enjoying fresh seafood, or just strolling along the pier, the Ferry Landing offers a relaxed and scenic experience right by the water.

Book a Ferry Ride to See the Bay

Booking a ferry ride on the Coronado Ferry. This fun activity never gets old. Have done it a few times and I can never tire of staring out into the ocean or watching the beautiful skyline as the waves crash from the ferry ride. It’s a short trip, maybe about 15 minutes, but there is so much to see and visually enjoy as you make your way through the bay. Important note: please bring a sweater (if it’s not the summer) as you might underestimate how cold it can get when you’re out in the middle of the bay on the ferry.

The Coronado Ferry operates between:

  • Broadway Pier (Downtown San Diego) → Coronado Ferry Landing
  • Convention Center (Downtown San Diego) → Coronado Ferry Landing (only in the mornings & evenings).

Ferry Schedule & Frequency – Runs daily, with departures approximately every 30 minutes to an hour. The first ferry from San Diego starts around 9:00 AM, and the last ferry back from Coronado is around 9:00-10:00 PM (depending on the season).

Ticket Prices & Booking – One-way fare: $9 per adult, free for kids under 4 years old.
Round-trip fare: You just buy two one-way tickets ($18 total). Pretty cool detail or tip, bikes ride free, so you can bring yours along for a scenic ride around Coronado! You can purchase tickets online, at the ferry ticket booth, or via the Flagship Cruises & Events website.

    Tips For Visiting Coronado Beach

Visiting you’ll need to keep several things in mind, from sunscreen, to comfortable clothing, to what kind of experience you want to have, budget or luxury, pet friendly and family friendly areas, etc. I’ve listed some options and notations on important reminders to hopefully help you figure some of that out before visiting the area.

Packing Essentials and Tips for the Beach

As always, I love to remind my readers to always pack and bring sunscreen. Protect your skin with broad-spectrum SPF, along with lip balm with SPF, always. It will pay off in the long run protecting you from potential skin cancers. Always pack snacks, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve felt the urge to leave the beach early because I got hungry. Bring some kind of shade as laying in the sun for a long period of time can start to feel harsh, especially after you feel you’ve had enough tanning. Portable cooler and some sandals with a hat for some evening walks will be just right.

Budget Friendly Tips While Visiting Coronado

    Visit the Beach

Coronado Beach is free to access and offers beautiful views, making it an ideal spot for sunbathing, swimming, or playing beach games with the family. Pack your own snacks and drinks for a relaxed day by the water. If you’re hungry and didn’t bring food, it can be a pricey location for food options.

    Picnic at the Beach

This is something we love to do, bring your own picnic from home or grab affordable takeout like Clayton’s Mexican Takeout or Village Pizzeria and enjoy it on the sand. It’s a great way to save money while enjoying a meal with a view.

    Explore the Coronado Ferry Landing

Family Friendly Tips to Exploring Coronado

If you’re bringing young ones, we know the drill and how difficult it can be if you show up to visit these places and happen to forget something critical. Some quick reminders below:

    • Pack Plenty of Snacks and Water – Bring a cooler or beach bag with healthy snacks, drinks, and fruit to keep the kids energized throughout the day. You can also enjoy a beach picnic by the shore.
    • Bring Beach Toys and Games – Kids will have a blast with beach toys like frisbees, buckets, shovels, and beach balls. Consider bringing a kite or setting up a beach volleyball game for some extra fun.
    • Use Sun Protection – Keep the family protected from the sun with sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses. If you have little ones, a beach tent or umbrella can provide some much-needed shade for naps and breaks.
    • Take Advantage of Shallow Waters – The water at Central Beach has gentle waves, making it ideal for younger children to splash and play safely. Always keep an eye on the kids while they’re in the water.
    • Visit the Playground – There’s a playground near the beach where kids can take a break from the sand and enjoy swings, slides, and other fun equipment. It’s a great place for them to burn off some extra energy.
    • Bring a stroller or wagon if space allows as we all know young ones get tired quickly. You might get stuck carrying your children around town!
    • Plan for Early or Late Visits – For a less crowded experience, head to the beach early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the sun isn’t too hot and the beach isn’t as busy.
    • Look for Seashells – Take a walk along the shore and help the kids collect seashells, which can be a fun and educational activity. You can even turn them into souvenirs by making simple crafts later.
